A heavy pair of cast silver and parcel gilt bangle bracelets from Bhutan, mid 20th century. Of traditional Himalayan style, the c-shaped bangles decorated with a deeply carved floral and foliate band terminating in a pair of unusual double makara (mythical chimeric beast) heads.
In the Buddhist tradition, the damaru is part of a collection of sacred implements and musical instrument was adopted from the tantric practices of ancient India. These reached the Bhutan from the 8th to 12th century, persisting in Bhutan as the practice of Vajrayana flourished there, even as it vanished in the rest of the world.
