He is the embodiment of active wisdom and compassion. He is also known as Guru Rinpochoe and he is the renowned tantric master of India. He came to Bhutan in the eight century and was invited by King Sindhu Raja of Bumthang to subdue a demon called Tshelging Karpo who harmed the people of Bumthang. Through his mastery of Tantric practices he subjugated the demon and other hostile spirits who obstructed the spread` of Buddhist teachings and converted them into powerful protectors of the Dharma. He was the first saint to spread Buddhism in Bhutan. He is the principal founder of the first school of Tibetan Buddhism, the Nyengma. From Bhutan he left to Tibet after he received an invitation from the great Tibetan King Trisong Detsen and he spread his teachings in Tibet. He stayed there for more than fifty years and founded monasteries and initiated tantric doctrine. According to the religious book he is the holy incarnation of three Buddhas: Buddha Gautama, Buddha Amitabha and Bodhisattva Avalokitshvara.
