The Buddha is with two of his principle disciples called Arhat Śāriputra and Arhat Moggallāna. Prior to meeting the Buddha they had renounced life to become disciples of the teacher Sañjaya Belaṭṭhaputta. Upon encountering the Buddha they realized that the teaching of the Buddha was far superior to that of Belatthaputta, not only with regard to its concern, but also with regard to the depth of its path. They thus became followers of the Buddha.
Arhat Śāriputra is considered to be the Buddhas foremost disciple, is depicted here on the Buddha’s right while Moggallāna is considered to be the second most accomplished disciple of the Buddha. He was renowned for acquiring various supernatural abilities such as flying, walking through walls and seeing the minds of others.
