The gho is the traditional and national dress for men in Bhutan. Introduced in the 17th century by Ngawang Namgyal, 1st Zhabdrung Rinpoche, to give the Bhutanese people a more distinctive identity. It is one of the most distinctive features of the Bhutanese is their traditional dress, unique garments that have evolved over thousands of years.
Men wear gho, which is a knee-length dress like the Japanese kimono and has some resemblance to the Scottish kilt. The upper part of the gho is tied up with a hand woven plain belt called kera around waist and forms a pouch in front. The lower part breaks into two neat folds at the back leaving a small space in between folds. The sleeves of the gho are neatly folded to form white cuffs called lagey, meaning hand sleeve.
